John Lennon (1940-1980) bezeichnete seinen Song Imagine (1971) als antireligiös, antinationalistisch und antikapitalistisch; doch die musikalisch zuckersüße Verpackung habe dazu beigetragen, dass der Song akzeptiert wurde. Imagine wurde sofort zu einem der populärsten und höchstgeschätzen Songs der bisherigen Pop- und Rockmusikgeschichte und ist offensichtlich weiterhin hochaktuell. Angeblich hat John Lennon den Text während eines Fluges auf eine Hotelrechnung geschrieben:
